Title: Controlling Urban Lighting by Human Motion Patterns results from a full Scala Experiment

Abstract: This paper presents a full scale experiment investigating the use of human motion intensities as input for illumination of a town square in the city Aalborg in Denmark. The activity on the town square was monitored by computer vision analysis of thermal images, motion intensity maps and tracking of people was generated and utilized to control the illumination. As illuminators 16 3.5 meter high RGB LED lamps was used. The experiment ran for a week in January and tested 4 different light designs. The result shows that in general people immersed into the street did not noticed that the light changed according to their presence or actions but people watching from the outside to a larger degree noticed the interaction between the illumination and the immersed persons.
